Professor Mohd Ezani, CEO of the National Heart Centre, pointed out that cardiovascular diseases account for more than 23% of the total deaths in Malaysia, of which 30% of patients are under the age of 60. The increase in hypertension, diabetes and obesity has further pushed up the incidence of heart disease, of which about 70% of cases have already developed to a serious stage when diagnosed.

He stressed that athletes in particular need regular heart checks to address the potential impact of high-intensity activities on the heart. To this end, the National Heart Center will re-launch the “Sports Cardiovascular Service” in February, focusing on early detection of high-risk patients and providing science-based heart health management solutions for professional and amateur athletes.

Mohammad Ezani said this while delivering a speech at the IJN·KHK LAND Ride 4 Your Heart 2025 event on Sunday (January 19).

The event was held at 7am and attracted 1,500 cyclists from different backgrounds to gather at Anyara Hills in Semenyih to promote awareness of protecting heart health and active living. The flag-off ceremony was presided over by the Selangor Chief Minister of Malaysia, Amirudin.

3 major routes to meet different cycling needs

The event is co-organized by the National Heart Institute (IJN) and Kwong Hon Kwong Land (KHK LAND), and is divided into three categories: a 115 km group that challenges the limits, a 60 km group suitable for enthusiasts, and an 18 km fun ride designed for families and beginners.

The 115 km route passes through the Central Mountain Range, Kuala Jilawang and Ulu Langat, posing a great challenge to experienced riders; the 60 km route is suitable for cycling enthusiasts, providing an experience that combines challenges and scenery; the 18 km fun ride emphasizes leisure and parent-child interaction, providing relaxing cycling fun for the whole family.

Amirudin spoke highly of the significance of this activity, saying that it not only promotes heart health, but also sets an example for building a healthier community. He said that similar collaborations can effectively raise public health awareness and encourage more people to choose an active lifestyle.
