SURGICAL OVERVIEW

Total Volume of Cardiothoracic Surgeries, 2017 (N =4,144), 2018 (N=4,327)

In 2018, IJN surgeons performed 4,327 cardiothoracic surgeries such as:

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
  • Congenital Heart Surgery
  • Heart valve repair and replacement
Open and Closed Heart Surgeries

In 2018, IJN surgeons performed 1,089 closed heart surgeries and 3,238 open heart surgeries:

  • Closed Heart: Thoracic surgery, Vascular surgery, Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) ligation, Blalock Taussig (BT) Shunt, coarctation repair
  • Open Heart: CABG, Congenital Heart surgery, Heart valve repair and replacement, Aortic root surgery

Risk Factors for Cardiac Surgeries (N =6,718), 2016 – 2018

Patients with complex medical backgrounds present greater challenges for cardiac procedures. Almost half the patients had diabetes mellitus at time of surgery.

In 2018, patients who have had cardiac surgeries had more complex backgrounds than patients at comparable hospitals.

Actual and Predicted Survival Rates for All Types of Open Heart Surgeries

All operations

The actual survival for all operations were 96.0% in 2018; this figure is equal to or better than the predicted survival rates estimated by the Euroscore and Parsonnet (benchmark risk scoring systems).

Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)

The actual survival rates for CABG surgery were 97.2%; which is better than predicted survival rates estimated by the Euroscore and Parsonnet scoring systems.

Mortality Rate for Isolated Mitral Valve Repair, 2016 to 2018 (Total no. of Isolated Mitral Valve Repair patients = 196)

Mitral Valve Repair is preferred over valve replacement whenever suitable. There was no death (mortality) for patients undergoing mitral valve repair from 2016 to 2018

Mortality Rate for Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and related procedures, 2016 to 2018

VSD Closure is the commonest surgery for acyanotic congenital heart defects. The death (mortality) rate for VSD closure is less than 1%.

Mortality Rate for Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) Correction and related procedures, 2016 to 2018

TOF correction is the commonest surgery performed for cyanotic congenital heart defects. The death (mortality) rate for TOF correction is less than 2%.
