Ventricular Septal Defect Treatment at IJN

At Institut Jantung Negara (IJN), we know that a diagnosis of Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)—one of the most common congenital heart defects—is a difficult time for any family. This condition is caused by an opening in the wall separating the heart’s two pumping chambers (ventricles). This defect creates an abnormal path for blood flow, placing extra strain on our patients’ hearts and lungs.

When families search for the most trusted VSD treatment in Malaysia, they look to us. We are proud to stand as the nation’s premier heart specialist center.

Comprehensive Care Through Our Dedicated Centre

Our commitment to these young patients and adults is reflected in our dedicated Paediatric & Congenital Heart Centre. This specialized focus makes us a leading destination for complex congenital heart care in Malaysia. We provide a full spectrum of care, combining advanced medicine with compassionate support. From newborns requiring initial assessment to adults living successfully with congenital heart disease, our specialists guide and support our patients and their families throughout every stage of their life journey.

Understanding the VSD Shunt Mechanism

High Pressure Source: The Left Ventricle (LV) generates high pressure to pump oxygen-rich blood to the entire body.

The Abnormal Flow: Due to the large pressure difference across the VSD hole, oxygenated blood (represented by the moving dots) is forced from the high-pressure LV into the low-pressure Right Ventricle (RV).

Increased Workload: This shunting means the RV and the blood vessels leading to the lungs are burdened with extra blood volume, forcing the heart and lungs to work harder.
